This Columbia University Project was a significant milestone for both our regional business manager’s professional journey and his personal connection to the city of New York. Located in the heart of Harlem, Columbia University represents the cultural and historical vibrancy of the area. Harlem, often regarded as the heartbeat of NYC, is rich in diversity, arts, and history, including the legendary Apollo Theater and the Harlem Renaissance. It is also home to his alma mater, where he was honored to be part of the first graduating class from Columbia’s Construction Management program, launched in 2020 via Coursera.

When the flooring contractor invited Schönox to consult on a subfloor solution for Columbia Athletics, we knew this was a chance to demonstrate the Schönox standard—high-speed and high-quality subfloor solutions paired with top-tier customer service.
The Challenge: Columbia Athletics needed a high-performance subfloor solution for a 10,000-square-foot strength and conditioning space. The project was under tight time constraints, as the facility had to be ready in just three days for the upcoming fall sports season. The primary challenge was selecting a flooring system that would not only meet the university’s strict timeline but also deliver superior durability and performance to support student-athletes.

The Solution: To ensure the best outcome, Columbia Athletics’ needs were evaluated and a system was devised that would provide a durable, moisture-resistant, and stable foundation. We implemented the following:
- Two Coats of MR 18: This one-component, rapid-drying moisture mitigation system and substrate solidifier ensured long-lasting performance, preventing any issues caused by moisture.
- SHP: Ready-mixed acrylic primer was applied to create an optimal bond between the existing substrate and the Schönox self-leveling compound.
- XM: Cement-based self-leveling compound was poured, providing a smooth, level, and durable subfloor for the strength and conditioning facility.
The Schönox system was selected not only for its efficiency but also for its ability to handle the demands of a high-impact athletic environment.

The Execution: With only three days to complete the project, the installation team worked efficiently and precisely, ensuring every step of the process was executed flawlessly. The installation was completed on schedule, and the flooring system cured in time for fall sports training. The collaboration between the flooring contractor, Schönox, and Columbia Athletics exemplified the importance of teamwork, expertise, and high standards in construction management.
The Outcome: The Columbia University Athletic Department was highly satisfied with the results. The subfloor met the performance requirements necessary for strength and conditioning activities while being installed within the tight deadline. The project reinforced our belief in delivering quality

workmanship at high speed without compromising excellence.
Conclusion: The Columbia University Project was more than just a flooring installation—it was a testament to the power of strategic planning, collaboration, and commitment to excellence. This project showcased how the right combination of products, expertise, and execution can deliver outstanding results, even under demanding deadlines. It was a win for Columbia University Athletics and for all parties involved.
